General Notes

Birth was registered between July-Sept 1877 in Whitechapel Registration District.
He was born at 39 Chicksand Street, Whitechapel, London to Frederick John Bailes and Sarah Ann Pailes on 15th June 1877.
1881 Census shows that he was 3 years of age and living in Mile End Old Town Eastern, London.
181 Census shows that he was 13 years of age and living in Mile End Old Town Western, London.
1901 Census shows that he was 22 years of age, born in Stepney, London and living at St Mary Stratford, Bow, London.
Parish records at the time of his marriage show that his father was a licensed victualler.
1911 Census shows that he was 33 years of age and living in Mile End Old Town, London.
He also lived at 23 Duckett Street, Stepney.
George Bailes (my grandfather) worked as a dustman for Stepney Borough Council working out of the depot in Canal Road, Stepney.When he retired, presumably at 65, he went to work as a "van boy" for LMS Railways (London Midland and Scottish Railways) working in the Plaistow and East Ham area.He never remarried and after being bombed out at Duckett Street came to live with his daughter Annie (not Anne) at 18 Edgar Road,Bow where he lived until his death on 27th May 1950 from cancer of the mouth. He is interred at Tower Hamlets Cemetery,Bow,London. His father Frederick Bailes had a number on pubs and ended up destitute and died in a workhouse. George himself never drank only at Christmas for this reason.

Death Notes

Death was registered between April-June 1950 in Hampstead Registration District at 72 years of age. Died at the age of 73 in 1950.

George's family with Florence Goody

George and Florence were married on May 26th, 1901.  They had three sons and three daughters, named George, Joseph, Stephen, Florence, Annie and Maud.
Parish records show that they were married at St Faith's Church, Shandy Street, Stepney on 26th May 1901 by W Boyd.
George was shown as being a bachelor of 22 years of age and Florence was shown as being a spinster of 22 years of age.
George and Florence were both shown as living at 25 Duckett Street, Stepney at the time of their marriage.
The witnesses were Joseph Goody and Charlotte Goody.
