George James Bailes
George was born on June 15th, 1877.
He was born at 39 Chicksand Street, Whitechapel, London to Frederick John Bailes and Sarah Ann Pailes on 15th June 1877.
1901 Census states he was born in Stepney, London.
His father was a licensed victualler.
He also lived at 23 Duckett Street, Stepney.
George Bailes (my grandfather) worked as a dustman for Stepney Borough Council working out of the depot in Canal Road, Stepney.When he retired, presumably at 65, he went to work as a "van boy" for LMS Railways (London Midland and Scottish Railways) working in the Plaistow and East Ham area.He never remarried and after being bombed out at Duckett Street came to live with his daughter Annie (not Anne) at 18 Edgar Road,Bow where he lived until his death on 27th May 1950 from cancer of the mouth. He is interred at Tower Hamlets Cemetery,Bow,London. His father Frederick Bailes had a number on pubs and ended up destitute and died in a workhouse. George himself never drank only at Christmas for this reason.
