Female Florence Ellen Alma Tipper

Florence was born on June 15th, 1887.

General Notes

Her father's name was Doctor E H Tipper and she was never known as Florence but always as Alma.
She was educated at a private girls' school located at Battle in Sussex.
Her husband, Roland, was employed in the rubber plantation industry in Malaya and they seem to have spent most of their married lives in that country. She often used to recount tales of her life in SE Asia which she seems to have loved and seems to have been a very comfortable existence with plenty of servants and a busy social life.
Alma moved into Bute Court hotel in Queens Gate, South Kensington, SW7 in about 1957 and lived there until 1965 after which she moved into a flat in Queens Gate Terrace, just off Gloucester Road.
Alma returned to the UK after the death of her husband and lived in various hotels on the company pension until she settled at the Bute Court. She was a cultured lady, skilled at playing the piano most evenings without music. She spent most days in the Kensington Public Library Reference Department.
She always had a great deal of time for children although she had none herself. She became very attached to Sion, the pet Corgi and took over walking him everyday in Kensington Gardens. When the owners of Bute Court Hotel retired Alma moved into her own flat and bought her own Corgi.
In appearance, she was very slim, blonde/grey hair (always maintained neatly under a fine net) and always smartly dressed.
She did not seem to have many friends or relatives and when the hotel closed for the Christmas holidays in 1963, 64 and 65 she would always book into another hotel for the two weeks. On one occasion she decided to go to Llandudno for the holiday period (by chauffeur-driven car) as the owners and family were also on holiday in north Wales. On returning to London she reported that she found the mountains of Snowdonia rather uninteresting by comparison with the Himalayas.
