1901 Census shows he was 30 years of age, born in Birch, Essex and living at Wood Lane, Messing Entire, Essex.

1901 Census shows he was a Green Grocer in Messing Entire, Essex.
Parish records show that he was a Labourer between 1902 and 1904. They then show that in 1906 he was a Dealer.
In 1913 the parish records for his daughter, Emily's, marriage show that he was a Reed Grower.
