John was born in 1751. John's father was John Goody and his mother was Mary Williams. He had a brother and three sisters, named Thomas, Sarah, Elizabeth and Mary. He was the oldest of the five children.

Parish records show that he was christened in St Peter's Church, Birch, Essex on 12th April 1751.
