From: THE PARISH OF NORTH FAMBRIDGE by Jeffrey J.D. Braithwaite
It is possible, that just after the 1828 Alehouse Keepers Act, a North Fambridge man, one David Goodey was one of those who started selling ale and spirits without a license.  He is listed in the Post Office Directory of 1859 as being a shopkeeper.  In local verbal history he is quoted as being a coal merchant who also used to sell intoxicating liquid from his home which was named Rose Cottage in Fambridge Road.  This cottage has been renamed and is now called Smugglers Cottage. As the Justices of the Peace managed to control the sale of liquor again David Goodey must have started to become concerned for in 1872 he applied for an Alehouse Keepers Tradesman’s License.  A one year license was issued on 24th August of that year but not for Rose Cottage but to sell from premises near North Fambridge Hall and owned by George Raven of Purleigh.  The license was renewed on 23rd August 1873 for a further one year period.
(At that time George Raven was farming 200 acres at Wash Farm, Purleigh and employed 7 men and 3 boys)

David Goody Beer Retailer
1881 Census shows that he was 58 years of age, born in Tilbury, Essex and living at Maldon Road, North Fambridge, Essex.
Records show that between 1875 and 1891 he was a Coal Merchant.  The coal was delivered on the river.
From “Notes of North Fambridge” written by Elsie Sophia Beach in early 1900s
Coal barges sailing past North Fambridge from Newcastle Upon Tyne to Hullbridge sometimes dropped off coal for North Fambridge coal merchant Mr Goody.
We believe they also collected horse dung from London, which was used on the local fields.
1891 Census shows that he was 67 years of age, born in Tilbury, Essex and living in Maldon Road, North Fambridge, Essex.
