Joseph was born in 1828.  Joseph's father was Abraham Rodrigues Brandon and his mother was Sarah Simpson Wood. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Alfred, Alfred, Julia, Esther and Lavinia.  He was the fifth oldest of the six children.

General Notes

1870 USA Census shows that he was 42 years of age, born in Barbados and living in 11th Ward, 2nd District, San Francisco, California, United States.
This census shows a wife named Sarah Cecilia Brandon and that she was 26 years of age, born in Louisiana, USA and living in 11th Ward, 2nd District, San Francisco, California, United States, however we do not know her surname before their marriage.  There are USA records that show that Sarah Cecilia Levy and Joseph R Brandon applied for a marriage licence on 14th June 1854 in Orleans, Louisiana, USA.
1880 USA Census shows that he was 52 years of age, born in West Indies and living in San Francisco, California, United States.
1900 USA Census shows that he was 73 years of age, born in Barbados and lodging in 844 Valencia Street, Precinct 19 San Francisco city Ward 34, San Francisco, California, United States.  This census shows that he arrived in USA in 1850 and became a naturalized USA citizen.
1910 USA Census shows that he was 82 years of age, born in the West Indies and lodging in 2014 Webster Street, San Francisco Assembly District 40, San Francisco, California, United States.

Below is an exact transcript of Joseph's obituary which appeared in the Placreville Mountain Democrat newspaper dated 29th April 1916.

Joseph Rodrigues Brandon, for fifty-six years a practicing lawyer of San Francisco, died at the home of his son, Dr Alfred R. Brandon, at San Leandro, Saturday night, April 22.  He was 88 years of age.   The funeral was held from the home of Dr. Brandon in San Leandro.
Brandon was the son of a wealthy planter of Barbados, British West Indies.  He was educated in London .  He came to New York in 1849, and later opened a branch of his London house of shipping and importing there. In 1855 he came to San Francisco and after the panic of 1867 took up the study of law.  During his career he was noted as one of the best land and title lawyers in the State.  Last October he removed to his son's home in San Leandro.
Four children survive him, and some time before his death Brandon divided his interests among them.   The children are Mrs P W H Ash, Mrs Madison Hawes Critcher, Dr Alfred R Brandon and Dr Julian R Brandon.

He was residing in 273 Sybil Avenue, San Leandro, San Francisco, California and was buried at the Home of Peace Jewish Cemetery, 1299 El Camino Real, Colma, San Francisco, USA on 26th April 1916.
Died at the age of 88 on April 22nd, 1916.
